Vermont Street BBQ

728 Massachusetts Street
Lawrence, KS 66044

Truth be told, Vermont Street Barbecue and I are developing a history as I write this. Actually, we're neighbors, and I'm finding out that we have a lot in common. We're both originally from Lawrence. Vermont Street Barbecue's originally from, well I guess it goes without saying, Vermont Street, and I grew up on a farm just north of Lawrence, but we both moved onto Massachusetts Street at about the same time.

I actually first got to know the place through my parents. They were eating there, and I stopped by to say hi, and was then, of course, formally introduced to Vermont Street via the wings that were on special. I started dropping by now and then. Vermont Street's well furnished, and you can easily lounge in the plush "comfy chairs," as Monty Python would call them, as you sit down and take your mind off of the world. I began to drop in with friends now and then, and we'd all hang out, and Vermont Street, ever the gracious host, would have lots of barbecue for us in the meantime. I've found that when I'm in there, I probably overstay my welcome. Usually, I end up sitting there long after I'm full and my to-go box is just waiting there across from whomever else's to-go box, and we just seem to forget about time and space and all of those other physical constructs of the universe and just keep talking away. The place itself just seems incredibly conducive to great conversation.

Sure, Vermont Street and I get along, and even though we have our spats like all neighbors do - like if it's got the music up way too loud when I'm trying to go some sleep, or when I don't have time to stop by, and it just keeps piping the smell of fresh barbecue up into my hallway anyway - we always seem to work it out, and I always keep coming back for more. Oh yeah, and as for the food: try the pulled pork. It's the best sandwich known to man.
